It’s been 48 hours since Disney announced that late-night host Jimmy Kimmel would be removed from the air indefinitely for his remarks on Charlie Kirk. During that time, many on the left vowed to boycott Disney, and some in Hollywood said they would not work with the company until Kimmel was put back on the air. Credit: Video Screenshot, ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, ABCHowever, despite the universal backlash, no one has had a harsher take on Disney’s decision to sideline Kimmel than fellow late-night host Stephen Colbert, who knows how it feels to be canceled after running afoul of the Trump Administration. In July, Colbert announced that his show would end in May 2026. This announcement was surprising because he has the top-rated show on late-night television. Credit: Disney/ABCParamount, which owns CBS, said that Colbert was being taken off the air due to “financial reasons.” However, like Disney’s decision to shelve Kimmel, Paramount had billions of dollars at stake and needed the Trump Administration’s cooperation. Paramount was merging with Skydance and needed the approval of FCC Chairman Brendan Carr. Paramount’s explanation hit when Trump took to social media to say that he was “loved” that Colbert was fired. Days before the Colbert announcement, the merger was approved. Using one of its properties, Colbert took to his late-night stage the night after Kimmel was taken off the air to bring Disney to task. After a blistering monologue in which he accused Disney of giving up on “Freedom of Speech,” Colbert used a Beauty and the Beast clip to blister Disney. In the video, Lumiere tells Disney employees to “shut their trap,” as he puts on a MAGA hat. The parody takes shots at Trump and Disney’s backing down at any sign of trouble. In the 15 hours since it was posted on YouTube, the blistering takedown of The Walt Disney Company has been viewed nearly half a million times, with many of the comments supporting Colbert and Kimmel. Disney plans to meet with Kimmel to “de-escalate” the situation before he returns to the air. The Sinclair Broadcast Group, the largest owner of ABC affiliates, has said it will not put Kimmel back on its airwaves until he apologizes and Disney makes a sizeable donation to Kirk’s family. As we head into the weekend, it appears that ABC, Disney, and Jimmy Kimmel are no closer to resolving the late-night host’s situation and getting the show back on the air.
