Over 65,000 cases pending in different courts in Tripura; conviction rate down: CM Manik Saha

(Image: @DrManikSaha2)As many as 65,013 cases are pending at the Tripura High Court and subordinate courts in the state, according to a law department report that was placed in the Assembly on September 19, when the ongoing autumn session started.Responding to a question moved jointly by Congress legislators Sudip Roy Barman and Gopal Chandra Roy, Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the law portfolio, said that 50,887 of the pending cases are criminal cases and the rest civil ones. Of the total 50,887 criminal cases, 50,707 are pending in the subordinate judiciary and 180 in the high court. Among the pending civil cases, 13,204 are in the subordinate judiciary, while 922 cases are in the high court.Among the pending cases, 460 are related to rape, followed by 403 related to murder, and 105 related to violence.While replying to a query on the conviction rate in the last three years, the chief minister said that a 30.57 per cent conviction rate was recorded in 2022-23, followed by 22.30 per cent in 2023-24 and 28.42 per cent in 2024-25.Citing data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Saha said in January that there was a 19.3 percent decline last year in the overall crime rate and that Tripura ranked third-lowest in the crime rate among all the 28 states of the country. Saha then said that crimes against women had reduced by 55 per cent, crimes related to properties by 45 per cent, physical assaults by 38 per cent, incidents of communal violence by 75 per cent, and violence by 37 per cent in 2024.In March, Saha said that his Government was committed to empowering women economically by providing them with 33 per cent reservation in all government jobs including in the Tripura State Rifles (TSR).
