Ben Johnson has firmly put his foot down. The Chicago Bears head coach, who was announced by the organization in January, has sought to transform the franchise that has been in the pits of despair for far too long. Williams was benched by Ben Johnson in Chicago’s 52-21 defeat to the Detroit LionsGettyHaving not won an NFL postseason game since 2010, the Bears thought their luck had changed when they possessed the number one overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, using it to draft former USC quarterback Caleb Williams. But just two games into his sophomore campaign, Williams was benched by his new head coach after suffering a thumping 52-21 defeat by Johnson’s former team, Detroit Lions, where he was the offensive coordinator for two seasons.Williams benched by Johnson for BagentWith eight minutes on the clock, and with Williams having recorded 234 total yards for two touchdowns and an interception, the 23-year-old was pulled from the game for Tyson Bagent. The third-year quarterback completed two of his three pass attempts for 27 yards, while he rushed for an additional seven yards from two carries. After the game, Williams expressed his discontent at being benched.“It sucks that your guys are out on the field, and you’re not,” he said.“And that’s frustrating because you put (in) so much time, energy and effort, and those guys are out there still battling, and you’re on the sideline.“But it was coach’s decision, and you gotta move on from it. In that situation, I’m thinking of how can I help this team, this offense? Whether it’s me saying something on the field or to whoever. Or whatever the case may be, just to get the momentum going, get us going and get this team rolling.”Entering the league, Williams was highly touted to be a generational talent, and throughout the opening weeks of his rookie season, all signs initially pointed to that coming into fruition.Tyson Bagent came in for Williams in Week 2 and is now fighting for the starting spotGettyHowever, after a 4-2 start in 2024, the Bears struggled to keep the momentum going coming out of their bye week, and won just one of their final 11 games to give them a 5-12 record to finish the campaign, which saw the mid-season firing of Matt Eberflus as head coach. Williams’ flashes of brilliance seemed to be just that – flashes – and other quarterbacks from his draft class including Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix very much impressed around the league. Johnson has put his stamp of disapproval on the BearsThere was optimism, though, when Johnson joined the organization that he could help Williams have a bounce-back campaign and reach the potential that he showed in college that he could become one of the NFL’s top players under center. But training camp proved to be turbulent, with Williams looking all out of sorts, missing throws and also throwing a plethora of interceptions in practice. These struggles have carried on into the start of the 2025 season, with Williams’ pass completion percentage slightly down on last season to 62.5 percent, and his coach already having been shown to be visibly upset with the quarterback on the sidelines. Johnson has been outspoken about how disappointed he is with the way the Bears have played through the first two weeks of the seasonGettyBut the team as a whole has so far failed to meet Johnson’s high expectations, which has seen the Bears coach call out his entire team. ‘I think our practice habits are yet to reflect a championship caliber team,’ Johnson said Wednesday. Of course, the Bears blew a 17-6 lead to JJ McCarthy and the Minnesota Vikings in their Week 1 clash, allowing 21 points to be scored in the fourth quarter which ultimately saw Chicago fall 27-24. In an 0-2 hole, the Bears are desperately looking for their first win of the season, but they have a difficult test to come as they host the Dallas Cowboys at Soldier Field next.Although Williams is expected to start the contest, should he post another poor performance, Johnson may be forced into considering the possibility of making a change at quarterback, which could open the door for Bagent to step right through.
