Credit Terrible MapsThe map above has gone mega viral as not very serious proposed two state solution for the United States. It obviously draws the idea of a proposed Israeli-Palestinian two state solutions such as Trump’s Peace Plan For Israel & Palestine, which would have included a West Bank to Gaza Tunnel linking the two territories together. And on the overall level of political division within America. But would it work?Below I give my not terribly serious answer. Before I answer I just want to make it clear the map is obviously a joke and not meant to be taken as a serious proposal. That said, it sparked my own curiosity, is there any way you could make a two state solution work for the US.The simple answer is no.While the US in many ways is more politically divided than at any time since the last time it tried a two state solution to solve its problems, there are some big issues. At first glance the map makes some sense, The West Coast, North-East and Hawaii all go to the blue United States and the rest goes to the Red United States. However, a look at the actual 2024 election map already shows some issues:The Blue US would include, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Iowa all of which voted for Trump and would not include Virginia, New Mexico and Colorado which all went for Harris. Moreover a country level map shows that there would be no way to make a land bridge between the two parts work:Contrast that with the 1860 election results:Lincoln didn’t win a single Southern state. And here’s what the map soon looked like:In conclusion, the two state solution idea, didn’t work in 1860, with a relatively clear geographic division of interests. So there’s no way it would work in 2025, unless you implemented a massive population transfer which of course has never had any negative consequences throughout history…
