The brother of Lewis Hamilton, Nicolas Hamilton, emerged from a fiery crash unscathed at the British Touring Car Championship this weekend.The 33-year-old was behind the wheel at Silverstone on Sunday in his Cupra Leon when his car was seen parked on the side of the track late on in race one with smoke billowing from the front due to an apparent oil fire.Hamilton’s car caught fire with just a handful of laps remaining@LH44Fanpage8 XDespite the intense situation, he made a swift exit as safety officials arrived to extinguish the flames.Nicolas also escaped without harm, and later took to Instagram to reveal his experience of the incident.“What an amazing picture of a very disappointing and scary moment for me, my family and friends to start my Sunday at Silverstone,” Nicolas said after the incident.“I was surprisingly very calm throughout the whole situation, trying to save the car from any further damage whilst keeping myself safe and I am so proud of myself on how I handled the situation.“After yesterday’s fire, there is a question mark on whether I will be driving for the last round of the season at Brands Hatch next weekend. “But if I don’t get the opportunity to finish the season off, I want to thank absolutely everyone for getting behind me this year.“Friends, family and sponsors for the continued love and support in helping me follow my dream and continue my journey.“I personally feel I have been driving the best I EVER have driven in the BTCC to date and I am so proud of my progress this year.”Racing runs in the Hamilton familyNicolas, who has Cerebral Palsy and races in a specially-modified car, made his track debut in 2011 at the Renault Clio Cup United Kingdom.He later competed in the European Touring Car Cup before his first British Touring Car Championship entry in 2015.Nicolas was able to escape from the burning vehicle@LH44Fanpage8 XA safety car rushed to the scene moments later@LH44Fanpage8 XNicolas did not compete in the other two races at Silverstone@LH44Fanpage8 XAcross six seasons in the competition, he made 132 race appearances before leaving in 2023.However, after a year-and-a-half away from the grid, Nicolas made his return to the Championship for this year’s season.Hamilton drives for Powder Monkey Brewing Co with Esidock and has featured in the majority of their races across the calendar.Speaking to the BBC, he recalled how his father Anthony encouraged him to enter motorsport like his older brother and racing icon Lewis.“My dad was like, ‘Maybe we should just give it a go and see’,” Nicolas said.“With my cerebral palsy I’m really hyper-sensitive to noise like loud or sudden bangs, they make me jump.Nicolas has been at several Grands Prix to support his seven-time champion and brother LewisGetty“So when they used to start the engine up for Lewis it used to scare me.”When remembering his first kart experience in a car park, he added: “I remember the anxiety I felt inside but excitement as well. “I was wearing all Lewis’ race kit. I ended up crashing that go-kart, I hit a kerb and I disappeared down a six-foot drop.”
