One of the most iconic villains in Star Wars, Maul (AKA Darth Maul), the disgraced Sith Lord, first returned to the faraway galaxy on the screen in the animated series The Clone Wars (2008) after surviving the events of The Phantom Menace (1999), in which he’s cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) during a lightsaber duel and falls into a chasm.Credit: LucasfilmOther Appearances From MaulAlthough he amounted to nothing more than a cold-blooded Sith working for Naboo Senator Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) in George Lucas’ 1999 prequel trilogy-opener, and with only a handful of lines (voiced by Peter Serafinowicz, performed physically by Ray Park), The Clone Wars fleshed Maul out entirely, offering a far more nuanced and complex character than the one we saw on the big screen. In the same way that Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) evolved into the show’s figurehead, Maul became the face of its villainous character lineup.Maul also appeared in the animated follow-up Star Wars Rebels (2014), with Witwer returning, and also enjoyed a brief live-action cameo in the spinoff film Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), with Witwer once again voicing him and Ray Park physically reprising his role again; however, that film puts Maul at a later point along the Star Wars timeline, long after Clone Wars and Rebels, when he’s involved with the crime syndicate Crimson Dawn.Credit: LucasfilmA Clone Wars Sequel Starring Maul Is ComingBut soon, fans will see the fan-favorite villain return in an official follow-up series to The Clone Wars with the upcoming animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.Announced by Witwer himself on stage at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Tokyo, Shadow Lord takes place “after the Clone Wars” to find Maul plotting to “to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire,” according to StarWars.com.The series will be told using the same animation style as its predecessor (as well as Disney+’s The Bad Batch and the Tales Of anthology series). However, while it picks up after The Clone Wars, it will also bridge the gap leading into Maul’s brief appearance at the end of Solo.Credit: LucasfilmStar Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord PrequelNow, ahead of the Disney+ series, Marvel Comics will release a prequel in March 2026 titled “Star Wars: Shadow of Maul”, a five-issue series written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Madibek Musabekov. The comic introduces Janix — the planet where Maul is attempting to regain control within the faraway galaxy’s criminal underworld. It will also feature a new cast of characters, including Captain Brander Lawson and his droid partner, Two Boots, who will be investigating the criminal underworld on Janix.“I’ve said it before: I’m a giant Star Wars nerd,” Percy told Marvel.com.“My previous experience writing in a galaxy far, far away—’Star Wars: Darth Maul – Black, White & Red’—was an absolute delight. But those were one-shots. Flirtations with the franchise. With ‘Shadow of Maul’, I’m able to share a more expansive story about one of my favorite characters, while also exploring a fresh angle on the Star Wars universe.”Credit: LucasfilmPercy added: “This is a sci-fi story, but it’s also a crime story. It’s a story about cops, criminal syndicates, a neon-lit, shadow-alleyed city that hides many sins and secrets.”“I’m teamed up with an artist who’s already a Star Wars veteran and legend: Madibek Musabeckov,” he continued. “His art is gritty and grounded and perfectly matches the noir tone. We’ve been in close contact with Lucasfilm—reading scripts and watching episodes of this fantastic new animated series—and our story will serve as a prelude to what viewers will see play out on the screen.”The comic sets the stage for what promises to be one of the darkest and most compelling entries in the Star Wars animated universe yet. Fans can preview interior artwork and covers by Derrick Chew, AKA, and Björn Barends on on Marvel.com. Pre-orders for “Shadow of Maul” #1 are available at local comic shops. The animated series will premiere on Disney+ in 2026.Are you excited about these new stories centered on Maul?
