The site of one of Malta’s most infamous homicides, the 1960 murder of eight-year-old Twannie Aquilina, is being renovated, with apartments in the block set to be available for short lets. Twannie was killed in a two-bedroom apartment at 102, St Dominic Street, Valletta, on 23rd August, 1960, in a crime that shook the country. His mother, Luiġa Camilleri, also known as Ġiġa, and her husband Leli were found guilty of the murder as reported by Times Of Malta.Malcolm Cassar, the developer behind the project, which involves converting 13 apartments into eight and restoring the facade, said that the renovation has been challenging due to both the sensitive nature of the site and the building’s condition. He explained that the property had been abandoned since around the time of the murder and suffered structural issues, and in recent years it had also been occupied by squatters, including drug addicts. Cassar added that he was unsure whether people would be deterred or intrigued by the idea of staying in the building. When asked about the possibility of including a memorial for Twannie, Cassar said no decision had been made yet, though he plans to name the block ‘Ġiġa Suites’.Despite her conviction, Ġiġa maintained her innocence throughout the trial and afterwards. Family members recalled that she never accepted the official version of events, insisting she had not harmed her son.Over the years, documentaries and reporting have highlighted inconsistencies in the case, including unidentified fingerprints and the absence of bloodstains on clothing allegedly worn during the killing, leaving lingering questions about what really happened at St Dominic Street. What do you think of this decision?•
