(PTI Photo)Lok Sabha on Monday witnessed an uproar after the Treasury and Opposition benches were engaged in a heated war of words over slogans allegedly raised at the Congress rally at the Ramlila Maidan a day earlier against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leading to adjournment of proceedings.Soon after Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced the commencement of Question Hour, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the alleged slogans against Modi at the Congress rally and demanded an apology from the party’s top leadership.“We are political opponents, not enemies. Congress workers have threatened to dig the grave of the prime minister at the Congress rally. This is the most unfortunate incident to happen… the entire senior Congress leadership was present at that rally,” Rijiju said, triggering protests from the Congress members.“…in 2014, a BJP MP had used an unparliamentary word against a member of the Opposition. PM Narendra Modi had immediately told his MP to tender an apology and they did so because we serve in this House as the representatives of the people,” he said. There could be nothing more humiliating or unfortunate for the people of the country than an insult to PM Modi, Rijiju said, who not only represented the wishes of 140 crore people but also commands respect across the world.“They should apologise to the nation through the medium of this House…in the Rajya Sabha as well, their leaders should apologise,” he said.Amid the din and protest, Speaker Om Birla adjourned the proceedings till 12 noon.Story continues below this adWhen the House reconvened, Congress members were in the Well of the House raising slogans against Union Home Minister Amit Shah.BJP member Dilip Saikia, who was in the Chair, allowed tabling of parliamentary papers and assured Congress members that he would allow them to raise their issues after the Zero Hour mentions.Saikia appealed to both sides to allow the Question Hour to continue but with members unrelenting and continuing to engage in heated exchanges, the Chair adjourned the House till 2 pm.Reacting on the issue, Pawan Khera, Chairman of the Congress’s publicity department, said while he had not seen the video himself, dignity was always required to be maintained in language.Story continues below this ad“The dignity of language must always be maintained; in any political party or political activity, there should be no compromise on respect in language.
