While ‘Zootopia 2’ Is Breaking Records, Disney Just Released One of the Biggest Box Office Bombs in Its History

It’s been a good couple of weeks at Walt Disney Studios. Since Thanksgiving, Disney has been celebrating the overwhelming success of Zootopia 2, as it has zoomed past $1.1 billion. It joined Lilo & Stitch as the only two films that have broken the $1 billion barrier this year. Disney has also chosen to change the trailer every week in an attempt to bring more people into the theaters. However, lying just below the surface of all this success is one of Disney’s worst-performing films ever, which very few people are paying attention to. This weekend, one Disney film had one of the worst opening weekends in Disney’s modern history. The good news for Disney is that Elle McCay only cost $35 million to make, so unlike some of its other 2025 bombs, Disney doesn’t stand to lose over $100 million on this film. Ella McCay is the latest film from writer/director James L. Brooks, the executive producer of The Simpsons and the writer of As Good As It Gets and Terms of Endearment. The film stars Emma Mackey, known for her roles in Barbie and Death on the Nile, as the title character who suddenly finds herself the governor of her state. It also stars Woody Harrelson, as well as Ayo Edebiri, who is known for The Bear and Inside Out 2, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Ella McCay joins Snow White, Elio, and Tron: Ares as some of Disney’s biggest flops of the year. However, the other three films each lost over $100 million and were very public embarrassments for The Walt Disney Company.
