With the United Democratic Front (UDF) retaining control of the Thrikkakara municipality in the local body elections, attention has now turned to possible changes in the leadership. Two councillors are being actively considered for the post of chairperson, according to party sources. Although a decision towards this end will be made by the party post the swearing in ceremony, Rashid Ullampilly and Shaji Vazhakkala have emerged as the main contenders for the post of chairperson. The UDF had not just retained its control but won with a clear majority of 27 out of 48 seats and has put itself in a comfortable position to form the administration without the help of Independents. While the UDF had to depend on Independent councillors during the last two terms (two Independents in 2015 and one in 2020), this time it has an upper hand.Mr. Ullampilly previously served as the chairman of the health standing committee in the Thrikkakara municipality from 2020 to 2023. He had given up the post when he became the party block president. He was the councillor of ward number 27, NGO Quarters. Mr. Ullampilly won from ward number 22, TV Centre.Rashid UllampillyMr. Vazhakkala was the chairperson of the municipality during the term 2010-2015. He is getting elected for the third term as a councillor.Meanwhile, the vice chairperson’s post will most likely go to the front partner, the Indian Union Muslim League.
