The idea for EPCOT came from Walt Disney’s idea for a better way of living, envisioning an experimental prototype community of tomorrow (EPCOT).Walt’s idea of futuristic city living included public transportation, educational experiences, and a sense of community, all of which are now found inside EPCOT theme park. While Disney never quite achieved his dream of building the city of tomorrow, EPCOT itself still serves as one of the most interesting places in all of Walt Disney World, mostly thanks to its always-evolving list of rides and attractions. One of EPCOT’s biggest strengths has always been its looks. The park is stunning, featuring a blend of nostalgic 80s and 90s stylings as well as modern-day sensibilities. One could call the park’s aesthetic a mish-mash of ideas, but there’s no denying just how beautiful the park can look, especially at night. However, the park has endured considerable controversy over a specific aspect of its nighttime lighting package, particularly the in-ground lighting system installed last year. One of the effects of the World Celebration was lighting put into the ground that would change colors throughout the night. The lights would work in conjunction with Spaceship Earth, illuminating the area in a stunning glow. However, just weeks after opening, these ground lights broke.Guests were quick to criticize Disney for using substandard materials that would not withstand guest traffic. It has been a battle ever since, with Disney seemingly unable to resolve the problem. Now, the lights sit turned off, essentially abandoned right in front, or rather below, guests.World Celebration’s in-ground lighting is COMPLETELY broken and turned off. CommuniCore Hall and Plaza were the final pieces of this controversial update and remain one of the hottest debated parts of Walt Disney World.Hardcore EPCOT fans feel these locations don’t fit into the park. Casual parkgoers are likely unaware of the purpose of CommuniCore Hall and Plaza.EPCOT has certainly undergone an identity crisis over the years, but the park feels like it’s in the middle of a very tough growing phase. What the future holds for the park is exciting to think about. We just hope Disney figures out the lighting by then. How do you feel about modern-day EPCOT?The post Disney World Admits Defeat, Gives up in EPCOT After Years-Long Battle appeared first on Inside the Magic.
