Attack and transport helicopters are now assigned a central role in immediate border defense.By Vered Weiss, World Israel NewsUnder the revised operational concept, attack and transport helicopters are now assigned a central role in immediate border defense. Some aircraft are expected to be airborne within minutes of an alert, with additional forces joining within an hour, aiming to strike and disrupt infiltrating forces before they can overwhelm ground units. The change reflects a reassessment of how aerial assets are used in the earliest stages of a cross-border assault. The unit is part of a broader reorganization overseen by Brig. Gen. Gilad Bar Tal, which reallocates a significant portion of the air force’s helicopter fleet from previous missions to territorial defense. The shift also includes revised rules of engagement that grant pilots wider latitude to open fire based on real-time assessments of threats on the ground, a departure from more restrictive protocols in place before October 7.Despite the expanded role, the helicopter force will not return to its earlier size. The air force once operated roughly 100 helicopters before the 2013–2014 period, when the Cobra squadrons were retired.Prior to the October 7 attack, plans were in place to further reduce the fleet to about 20 aircraft. Those reductions have now been halted.According to the Israel Defense Forces, helicopter units will instead stabilize at roughly 50 aircraft—twice the number previously envisioned, but still about half the size of the force a decade ago. Military officials said the revised figure reflects a balance between operational needs and resource constraints.Elements of the new doctrine began taking shape in the months following the 2023 attack, after the military conceded it lacked a prepared air response to a large-scale ground invasion. Full adjustments to deployments, manpower, and mission assignments required extended coordination and planning. The post IAF develops rapid-response force to prevent another Oct 7 appeared first on World Israel News.
