This sadly doesn’t surprise me. Have an aunt who has rented her separate basement for years. It’s the same sob story from every problem tenant: 1 - she isn’t flexible with rent. It’s her retirement income and there is a contract. Presumably, they see an old lady as the upstairs landlord and assume they will never have to pay full rent. 2 - tenant badmouths aunt to every neighbor who will listen that she is heartless and mean. She’s an old lady who is involved in the community and lives VERY modestly. 3 - tenant wants to make changes to apartment and have aunt pay for supplies, tools, and their labor to make improvements. See 1 and 2. Not sure why but the problem tenants alway want to make “improvements” (it’s actually a very nice basement apartment) and tell her it’s so they can stay as a tenant longer. It’s her 🚩
