(File Photo)The murder of a 17-year-old boy on a school playground in Gorakhpur on Friday led to violent protests in the area, as a crowd on Saturday allegedly attacked the houses and a shop belonging to the named accused.The situation prompted the police to deploy additional personnel to bring the situation under control. Police officials said the killing followed a dispute over a statement posted on a social media platform. Following the incident, three police personnel, including an officer of sub-inspector rank, were suspended for alleged negligence.The police said the victim and all four accused belong to the same village and, based on information gathered so far, all of them are minors. Officials added that, except for one accused, the others were students of the same school as the victim. The injured teenager was immediately rushed to a hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries while being taken for treatment.Angered by the incident, the victim’s family members and local residents blocked the road and staged a protest, demanding action against those responsible.The road blockade was lifted only after police officials assured the protesters of swift and appropriate action in the case. The police said the final rites of the victim were conducted later.Story continues below this adGyanendra Nath Prasad, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Gorakhpur, said, “An FIR has been registered against four persons, who are believed to be minors, and their specific roles in the incident are being examined.” He confirmed that three police personnel have been suspended in connection with the case.The police said that a preliminary inquiry revealed that the dispute between the victim and the prime suspect, who were earlier close friends, arose after the victim posted comments on a social media post shared by the main accused.Officials said the two had also been involved in a public altercation recently, which was defused following the intervention of local residents and appeared to have been settled at the time.The police further said that late on Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday, an unruly mob again targeted the houses of the accused and vandalised a shop belonging to one of them, damaging items kept inside and throwing them onto the road.Story continues below this adThe situation was brought under control after additional police teams reached the spot and dispersed the crowd after assuring them of prompt action in the case.
