The last rites of Amaravati farmer Rama Rao, who collapsed and died during a CRDA meeting in Mandadam, were performed on Sunday (December 28) at the local crematorium on Sunday. A large number of farmers, relatives and local residents participated in the funeral procession.CPI(M) State secretariat member Ch. Babu Rao, capital region secretary M. Ravi and other party leaders attended the funeral and criticised the State government and the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) for what they termed as callous negligence of farmers’ issues.Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Babu Rao said that although Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had reportedly assured the bereaved family of support over the phone, no concrete measure has been announced so far. He condemned the CRDA for issuing statements claiming it was not at fault, instead of acknowledging the grievances raised by Rama Rao regarding improper plot allotment in low-lying areas and issues related to road expansion and house removals. He alleged that blaming the deceased farmer by claiming he had not lodged complaints or had consented to road widening was highly objectionable. Mr. Babu Rao demanded that the CRDA withdraw its statements, apologise to farmers, and that the Chief Minister immediately announce at least ₹50 lakh as ex gratia to Ramarao’s family along with allotment of suitable plots.Warning of protests, if the government failed to respond, CPI(M) leaders said responsibility for any agitation would rest solely with the government.Published - December 28, 2025 06:57 pm IST
