Steelers make $45million DK Metcalf contract decision as new details emerge about Lions fan punch

DK Metcalf has caught a lucky break. Whilst he is serving a two-game suspension for an altercation with a Detroit Lions fan, signalling the end of his 2025 NFL regular season campaign, the Pittsburgh Steelers have afforded their star wide receiver a late Christmas gift. The Steelers have revealed they will not be voiding Metcalf’s guaranteed moneyGettyMetcalf was picked up on the broadcast midway through the Steelers’ 29-24 victory over the Lions in Week 16 holding a fan down by his blue wig, before appearing to throw a punch.Whilst the 28-year-old continued in the contest with no punishment, finishing with four catches for 42 yards, the NFL later intervened. They distributed Metcalf with a two-game suspension, which was upheld after an appeal, for violating league policy, and he forfeited $555,556 in salary.Furthermore, the suspension also voided $45 million in future guaranteed money. The Lions fan involved was not found guilty of any offence or violation of the fan code of conduct.Although this appeared to be a hefty penalty with severe future ramifications for Metcalf, who penned a four-year, $132 million deal with the Black and Gold in the offseason, NFL insider Jay Glazer revealed that the Steelers would not void the guarantees in his contract after all.New details emerge over what transpiredIn Glazers’ report, he revealed that Metcalf had already had an interaction with this fan before when he was a member of the Seattle Seahawks, though the Steelers were never made aware of this. “I actually have the security communication between the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks’ security from a game last year when DK Metcalf, when he was with the Seahawks, complained about that exact same fan to security,” Glazer said on the FOX Sports NFL pregame broadcast. “And, at the time there, he asked for that fan to be removed over a very derogatory comment. I’m not going to repeat what the comments are that are on here. “Obviously, we don’t condone ever hitting a fan or anybody else, but in this it says, ‘When we investigated during the game, the individuals around him stated and corroborated that the fan was being out of line and had indeed said these derogatory statements. They even asked us to remove the guy.’X/@NFLONCBSMetcalf swung on a fan during the Lions-Steelers game[/caption]Metcalf finished his first season in Pittsburgh with 850 yards and 6 TDsGetty“The odd part of this also is that the Pittsburgh Steelers had no knowledge of this.”When Glazer was asked what Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin‘s reaction to the altercation was, the insider revealed that it was all done very discreetly due to Tomlin being mic’ed up on the day. “This is actually kind of funny. I was talking to Mike Tomlin this morning,” said Glazer. He said, ‘I was mic’ed up. When you’re mic’ed up, nobody wants to talk to you, so I didn’t know.’“Finally, Arthur Smith [Steelers offensive coordinator] came over to him and wrote it on his call sheet. ‘DK hit a fan’ to which Mike Tomlin went ‘Ok then’. You can’t make it up.”Metcalf is ultimately absent for the Steelers’ divisional clash against the Cleveland Browns in Week 17, with the Baltimore Ravens hoping that Shedeur Sanders can come away from Huntington Bank Field with a second career victory under his name to send the AFC North title battle to the final game of the regular season. Aaron Rodgers and the Steel City will also be without their receiving yards leader (850 yards, 6 touchdowns) for the Week 18 contest against Baltimore at Acrisure Stadium, though by then, Pittsburgh may have already locked down a playoff berth.
