Most of its clients have between $5 million and $15 million in assets, according to Scott Welch, a partner and CIO at the firm. Some have upwards of $1 billion in holdings. As a result, the firm’s advisors tend to worry less about pushing their clients into the next wealth bracket and more about delivering consistent portfolio performance over time. In pursuit of that goal, Certuity has avoided some popular recent investment trends, such as Bitcoin ETFs, but has made significant allocations to international equities, for example. It has also built sizable allocations to private markets, including private equity, private credit, sports investing and a soon-to-come drawdown energy infrastructure fund. WealthManagement.com recently spoke to Welch about Certuity’s investment philosophy and how it makes its investment choices.This Q&A has been edited for length, style and clarity. WealthManagement.com: What is the profile of a typical Certuity wealth management client?SW: It’s a little bit of a barbell with respect to the Certuity client base. We have many families that are very high-net-worth, $25 million and above up to a couple with $1 billion or more. That’s certainly an important subset of our clients. But we also have a very wide swath of clients I would describe as high-net-worth, with $5 million to $15 million. Maybe we have more clients in that range, but we probably have more assets in the ultra-high-net-worth base. WM: What’s your overarching investment philosophy?SW: There are a couple of different bullet points in the answer to that question. The first is that we view ourselves as strategic investors. We very rarely try to make overtly tactical decisions. We try to develop intelligent asset allocation models that we are pretty consistent with. We will make adjustments as the market calls for it, we are not completely static, but we tend to move slowly at the allocation level.Within those allocations, we have a couple of beliefs. We believe in global diversification, so our portfolios typically have a very healthy exposure outside the U.S. We believe in using both active and passive traditional strategies to optimize fees and taxes. Taxes are a big area of focus for us. We work with a partner on a tax overlay program to improve the efficiency of our taxable clients’ portfolios.
