By Ben Musanje The Uganda Police Force has assured the public of heightened security during the Christmas and New Year festivities, Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba has said.In a festive message released today (Tuesday) as the country counts down to Christmas and the New Year 2026, Byakagaba extended season’s greetings to Ugandans and residents, wishing them peace, joy and meaningful celebrations with family and loved ones.“This year’s festive season is particularly special as it coincides with the 2026 general elections period,” Byakagaba noted, adding that all security agencies have been placed on high alert to ensure nationwide celebrations remain peaceful, safe and orderly.The police chief said the Uganda Police Force, working jointly with sister security agencies, is fully committed to safeguarding the safety and well-being of all people during the holiday period.“All security agencies are on heightened alert to guarantee that celebrations across the country take place in a peaceful, safe and orderly environment,” he said.Byakagaba urged the public to celebrate responsibly, remain vigilant and cooperate with security personnel deployed across the country, stressing that public support is critical to maintaining law and order during the busy festive season.“As we prepare to welcome the New Year, we encourage everyone to work with security agencies so that we can ensure a joyous and secure festive season for all,” he said.Uganda traditionally experiences increased travel and public gatherings during the Christmas and New Year holidays, prompting authorities to intensify patrols, traffic enforcement and surveillance in urban centers and along major highways.
