Chris Richards exits Crystal Palace’s EFL Cup quarterfinal loss with foot injury

Chris Richards started Crystal Palace’s EFL Cup quarterfinal tie against Arsenal on Tuesday but did not finish the match on the field. Richards was stretched off of the field in the 74th minute at the Emirates Stadium with an apparent foot injury. The American defender’s sock was covered in blood after an accidental coming together with Gunners forward Gabriel Jesus. Richards rose high to clear a cross into the Palace box in the 70th minute before dropping to the ground. He received treatment from the Crystal Palace medical staff for a few minutes before being stretchered off and being replaced by Will Hughes. Arsenal would use an 80th minute own goal from Palace’s Maxence Lacroix to grab a late 1-0 lead but the Eagles would equalize in second-half stoppage time through Marc Guehi’s finish. A lengthy penalty shootout went in the Gunners favor though after Lacroix saw his spot kick denied by Kepa Arrizabalaga in the eighth round. Richards has been a consistent performer in Oliver Glasner’s squad this season, logging 24 appearances in all competitions. The U.S. men’s national team defender helped the Eagles win the FA Cup last May and the Community Shield in August while also advancing to the UEFA Conference League knockout stage. Glasner provided an update on Richards’ injury postmatch, hoping that it wouldn’t keep him out for a long period of time. “He got a knock on his foot, a stamp on his foot, and it had to be stitched,” said Glasner. “I don’t know how many stitches, but a few. The doctor told me it doesn’t look so bad. I’m always hopeful. We have to be hopeful. I don’t know if he will be okay for the Tottenham game, but I’m still hoping that he will be back against Fulham.”The Eagles are already dealing with several absentees in the roster, including six injuries and Ismaila Sarr’s absence due to the African Cup of Nations. Crystal Palace’s busy December schedule continues on the 28th against Tottenham before kicking off its 2026 with a London Derby against Fulham on New Year’s Day.
