The Hyderabad City Traffic Police have intensified enforcement drives across the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate to ensure public safety ahead of the New Year Eve.304 motorists caught for drunk drivingSpecial drunk driving inspections began on Wednesday (December 24, 2025) and will continue till December 31, the police said. On the first day of the drive, 304 motorists were caught driving under the influence of alcohol, including one minor. Police seized 304 vehicles from the violators as part of the enforcement action.Hyderabad Police Commissioner, V.C. Sajjanar, personally supervised field-level drunk driving inspections at the TG Study Circle in Banjara Hills around the midnight. He reviewed inspection procedures, assessed the performance of personnel on duty and issued instructions to streamline enforcement.During the drive, the Commissioner interacted with motorists caught driving under the influence and cautioned them about the risks associated with drunk driving, stating that such behaviour endangered both drivers and other road users.Intensive checks in 120 locationsSpeaking to the media, Mr. Sajjanar said a special enforcement drive had been launched across the city to prevent any untoward incidents during the festive period. Seven additional platoons have been deployed to strengthen the existing force, while intensive checking is being carried out at 120 locations within the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate limits.PenaltyThe Commissioner warned that there would be zero tolerance towards drunk driving. Vehicles of violators would be seized immediately, a fine of ₹10,000 imposed and offenders could face up to six months in prison. Depending on the seriousness of the violation, police would also recommend to the Transport Department permanent cancellation of driving licences, he said.The traffic police have appealed to citizens to act responsibly and avoid driving after consuming alcohol, stating that strict legal action would continue through the New Year period.Published - December 25, 2025 05:42 pm IST
