The tremor was recorded in the evening on Saturday, December 27th, 2025, at 9:51 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface. The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) at magnitude 6.1, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.8, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.8.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.Moderate shaking probably occurred in Puerto Santa (pop. 14,100) located 20 km from the epicenter, Coishco (pop. 15,100) 24 km away, and Chimbote (pop. 317,000) 28 km away.In Viru (pop. 20,800) located 61 km from the epicenter, Moche (pop. 22,600) 90 km away, Trujillo (pop. 919,900) 97 km away, and Laredo (pop. 24,700) 98 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake. If you were or still are in this area during the quake help others with your feedback and report it here.Download the Volcanoes & Earthquakes app and get one of the fastest seismic alerts online: Android | iOSI didn't feel itI felt this quakeEarthquake detailsDate & timeDec 28, 2025 02:51:50 UTC - Local time at epicenterSunday, Dec 28, 2025, at 02:51 am (Universal Time GMT +0)StatusconfirmedMagnitude5.8Depth67 kmEpicenter latitude / longitude8.9622°S / 78.8348°WAncash, PeruSeismic antipode8.9622°N / 101.1652°EThailandQuality63 seismic stations (GFZ)Shaking intensityIV Light shaking near epicenterFelt22 reportsPrimary data sourceEMSC (European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre)Weather at epicenter at time of quakeBroken Clouds 20.8°C (69 F), humidity: 81%, wind: 6 m/s (12 kts) from SSEEstimated seismic energy released3.2 x 1013 joules (8.78 gigawatt hours, equivalent to 7558 tons of TNT or 0.5 atomic bombs!) | equivalent to ONE quake of magnitude 5.8 | about seismic energy12 minutes ago reported feltDec 28, 2025 02:51 GMT / Dec 28, 2025 02:51 am (Universal Time)Lat / Lng: -8.9622 / -78.8348: Near Coast OF Northern PeruSource: EMSCOther sources: GFZ: 5.8 / 10 km, RaspberryShake: 5.8 / 10 km, 1 more...Detail info | Read user reports | You felt it? - Report it!';storedMarkers.push(['quake-22548719',-8.96220,-78.83480,'12 minutes ago: Mag. 5.8, Near Coast OF Northern Peru',html,'quakes-7-24.png',30,30,15,15,126]); function mkRep(id,notFelt){var nFelt=notFelt||false;var src="https://www.volcanoesandearthquakes.com/app/earthquake-report.php?quakeId="+id;if(nFelt==true){src+="¬Felt=true";}window.open(src,"","status=0,toolbar=0,location=0,directories=0,menubar=0,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,height=400,width=350");} function locationHashChanged(e){-1!=e.oldURL.indexOf("#popupMap")&&closePopup()} window.onhashchange = locationHashChanged; function comment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=(t.dataset.id,document.getElementById("commentForm"));"none"==a.style.display?(t.appendChild(a),a.style.display="block"):a.style.display="none"}function sendComment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=t.parentNode.dataset.id,n=document.getElementById("commentContent"),p=n.value.trim();if(p){var o="id="+a+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId;o+="&comment="+decodeURIComponent(p),mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",o,function(e){e.responseText;alert("Thank you for submitting your comment!"),t.style.display="none",n.value=""})}}function flagReport(e){var t=e.parentNode.dataset.id;if(confirm("Report this as inappropriate?")){var a="id="+t+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&flagAsInappropriate=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",a,function(t){var a=t.responseText;alert(a),e.style.display="none"})}}function likeReport(e){var t="id="+e.parentNode.dataset.id+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&like=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",t,function(t){t.responseText;e.style.opacity=.5})}]]>[smaller] [bigger]Most recent quakes Top 20 past 24 hrs Quakes in PeruNearby placesThe closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Trujillo, a city of 0.9 million people in Peru, in 97 km (60 mi) distance north of the epicenter. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)III: Weak shaking10121–413 km (75–257 mi)357 km (222 mi)IV: Light shaking8386–410 km (240–255 mi)399 km (248 mi)VI: Strong shaking295–95 km (59–59 mi)95 km (59 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (23 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.I didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 63 km2 (24 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 14 km (9 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Dec 28, 2025 02:51 am (Universal Time)12 minutes ago - felt5.867 km0 km - This quakeSouth Pacific Ocean, 29 km NW of Chimbote, Ancash, PeruMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksPrevious quakes in the same area of this earthquakeStrongest in 30 yearsThe earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of Peru in over 30 years.
