The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Sunday, December 28th, 2025, at 9:15 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Bukittinggi (pop. 121,000) located 35 km from the epicenter, Padangpanjang (pop. 58,600) 48 km away, Pariaman (pop. 92,200) 52 km away, and Payakumbuh (pop. 139,600) 60 km away.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Padang (pop. 909,000) located 93 km from the epicenter, Solok (pop. 73,400) 95 km away, and Sijunjung (pop. 27,800) 115 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. Out of these, 3 people indicated they felt it. The quake was reported to have been felt in up to approx. 30–40 km (18.6–25 mi) distance. Most reports came from Bukittinggi (1 report), a city with more than 120,000 inhabitants in Provinsi Sumatera Barat in 39 km (24 mi) distance southeast of the epicenter, Indonesia. Further below is a list of places where most people reported this quake. This section is being updated as new data comes in.User reports estimate the perceived ground shaking intensity according to the MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) scale.TranslateLubuk Basung (19.5 km S of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) (reported through our app)453.3 km ENE of epicenter [Map] / not felt (reported through our app)38.7 km ESE of epicenter [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) (reported through our app)20.7 km SSW of epicenter [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) (reported through our app)List of cities/places with most reportsPlaceDistance from epicenterAverage reported Shaking IntensityNr. of reportsBukittinggi, Provinsi Sumatera Barat, Indonesia(Pop.: 121,028)39 km (24 mi)SE of epicenterIV: Light shaking1Note: Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (4 in total) could be used for statistics. What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale? The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt1453–453 km (281–281 mi)453 km (281 mi)IV: Light shaking319.4–39 km (12–24 mi)26 km (16 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (4 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.I didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 6 km2 (2 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 4 km (3 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Dec 28, 2025 09:15 am (Jakarta)20 minutes ago - felt4.810 km0 km - This quakeSouthern Sumatra, IndonesiaMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 55 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 109 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 7 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 62.5 years)Mag. 6 or higher: 0.1 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 10.5 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 0.65 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 1.6 years)Mag. 4 or higher: 11.4 quakes per yearMag. 3 or higher: 55 quakes per year (or 4.6 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 104 quakes per year (or 8.7 quakes per month)Mag. 1 or higher: 110 quakes per year (or 9.1 quakes per month)The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity.
