Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has insisted that Kobbie Mainoo can be the future of the football club – if he takes his chance. The England international’s plight at Old Trafford has been one of the bigger talking points in the Premier League this season.Amorim is being forced to answer questions on Mainoo and his future with Manchester UnitedAFPA bright start to his career saw him scoring in an FA Cup final win in 2024 for the Red Devils and starting in a European Championship final with the Three Lions. However, the arrival of Amorim in Manchester in November of that year has gradually seen his game time peter out.Still only 20, Mainoo has started one game this season – their shock League Cup exit to Grimsby in August.Since then, he’s made 11 substitute appearances culminating in the 4-4 draw with Bournemouth. That game saw Mainoo’s half-brother Jordan Mainoo-Hames wearing a ‘free Kobbie Mainoo‘ t-shirt during the clash. The player entered the match in the 61st minute with Manchester United losing 3-2.With him on the pitch they went 4-3 up, but then conceded an equaliser in the 84th minute. His half-brother’s action increased the scrutiny on the situation before an injury ruled him out of their next game – a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa. That game saw talisman Bruno Fernandes injured and it’s a development which should see Mainoo’s time on the pitch increase. And his manager has insisted he can turn his career around if he takes that chance, despite the fact he will miss the Boxing Day clash with Newcastle through injury.Mainoo’s lack of starts this season are causing plenty of scrutinyAmorim said: “We were talking about how Kobbie doesn’t have the minutes that he deserves or needs.“And then you have the opportunity and Kobbie is not there. So sometimes it’s bad luck.”He added: “He’s going to be the future of Manchester United, that is my feeling.“He just needs to wait for his chance. Everything can change in football in two days.”And the Portuguese boss has also backtracked slightly on his belief that the player could only play in a role similar to that of Fernandes. He said: “Kobbie Mainoo will have the opportunity he has all the time.Mainoo’s half-brother stirred the pot with his shirt at Old Trafford in mid-December@jxrdan Instagram“He played in different positions and we talk about the position of Casemiro — he can do that position.“If we play with three, he can play like we played in the last game, the position of Mason Mount.”
