Liverpool’s set-piece issues again came to the fore in the 2-1 win at home to Wolves, but Arne Slot has produced a measured response to them. The Reds are now fourth in the Premier League and unbeaten in seven matches, following a hard-earned three points at Anfield on Saturday.Liverpool were cruising at 2-0 up, only to let in a 12th set-piece goal of the season in the Premier League – no team has conceded more.Speaking to reporters after the game, Slot assessed his champions’ woes in that area, finding positives but also admitting improvements are needed. “Scoring goals in the Premier League is not easy, I mean in open play,” Slot said.“I see this in almost every single game I watch because the amount of set-piece goals scored gets more and more and more.“Unfortunately, we’re maybe the only team that hardly ever scores from a set-piece, and even worse, we constantly concede.“But then, I think I said two, three or four weeks ago, we have to make sure that when things go against us – [it] could be a set-piece, could be other things – we still need to find a way to win the game.“In the last two games we conceded a set-piece, but we were able to win and that hasn’t happened that many times this season.“That’s, again, progress for me, but it’s obvious there are more things for us to improve and this is definitely one of them. Although, we had a great set-piece – the first one after half-time.“It was completely told to the players at half-time – not by me, by someone else – and it was an open chance for Florian but unfortunately it went the wrong side of the post.“I think we have been unlucky in multiple situations in our set-pieces; it is 18 games now and we need to improve.”Liverpool conceded 26 goals this league season with 12 from set-pieces, that’s 46%.Slot defenders (mostly Top Reds and club friendly media) will only focus on Konate and do gymnastics to deflect from Slot and his set-pieces coach responsibility. https://t.co/KldPI2RCt5— Parted Beard (@PartedBeard) December 27, 2025While Slot is right to try and be optimistic after an improved run of form and results, Liverpool’s ineptitude from set-pieces this season is unacceptable. The best teams are rock-solid in such situations, not allowing soft goals to be conceded, but the Reds are the opposite of that, handing opponents ways back into games. It is hard to explain why the Reds are struggling so much, especially as the title-winning defensive axis of Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate is still present. That said, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz are diminutive signings, and Liverpool may have been left behind compared to other clubs focusing more on physicality and set-pieces.Being the worst team in the league at conceding from these areas is alarming, however, not least because the Reds were crowned champions only seven months ago.It has to change, and fast, because this unbeaten run isn’t sustainable without significant improvements being made.
