The father of former Nickelodeon actor Tylor Chase has spoken out after a video showed his son appearing to be homeless in Los Angeles. Chase played Martin Qwerly in Ned’s Declassified Survival Guide, which ran from 2004 to 2007. The video went viral this month when a fan approached the now 36-year-old actor outside a shopping area. According to Unilad, Riverside California Police said their officers contact Chase at least once a week. They offer him help with temporary shelter and other resources, but he always refuses. Several of his former co-stars have commented on the situation, and now his father has shared more details. Joseph Mendez Jr, Chase’s father, said his son has been dealing with serious problems for over ten years. He described Chase as a “wonderful person” but explained the family has tried many times to get him help. They have looked into treatment for both substance use and mental health issues. The family tried everything, but Chase refused ongoing help The family got Chase into a rehab center in 2021. His father said there was some progress during that time. However, Chase later decided to stop taking his medication and started using substances again. He then moved to California to stay with his mother, hoping things would get better. Mendez Jr said his son has refused continued treatment and support despite the family’s efforts. He stressed that while they have tried for many years, Chase must be willing to accept the help being offered. The situation shows how difficult it can be when someone doesn’t want assistance. Stories of people facing homelessness who accept help often have better outcomes. His mother doesn’t want any money raised for him. She wants him to get medical treatment. He obviously is refusing and living out there by choice. https://t.co/aV4skhBSwQ pic.twitter.com/KjEnTovO2S— Sassy Southern Blonde (@SassySouthBlond) December 21, 2025 After the video spread online, a TikToker named LetHallAlli created a GoFundMe to raise money for Chase. But she soon got a message from Chase’s mother, who said her son wasn’t in the right mental state to handle large amounts of money. The mother said Chase loses phones within a day or two and cannot manage money or medication by himself. #Exclusive Former Nickelodeon star Tylor Chase is refusing treatment and housing from the police. https://t.co/wHXbv4jEWO pic.twitter.com/LignoX0gNH— TMZ (@TMZ) December 22, 2025 Chase’s mother agreed to receive the donated money instead. She said she would be willing to meet but warned that giving money directly to her son could actually hurt him. She described him as a “good, sweet kid” but said he needs medical help. Unfortunately, homeless individuals often face cruel treatment from strangers instead of compassion. Chase himself told reporters that he isn’t actually homeless. He said he has friends and family nearby, including his mother, and people are helping him. He mentioned having access to a housing shelter assistance program and described receiving help from charitable people as a “true privilege.”
