Edinson Cavani has announced his retirement from football at the age of 38.The former Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United striker has called time on a glittering career that saw him recognised as one of the best goalscorers of his generation.Announcing the decision on social media, Cavani said he had fulfilled his childhood dreams in the professional game.“THANK YOU VERY MUCH, FOOTBALL!!!” he wrote.“You shaped me, challenged me, taught me to get back up when I fell, and to value every step of the journey. You allowed me to fulfil dreams that, as a child, seemed impossible, and to meet incredible people both on and off the pitch. Edi.”After starting his career at Danubio in his native Uruguay, Cavani impressed in Italy with Palermo before a defining transfer to Napoli.He scored 104 goals in just 138 games for Napoli, earning the Capocannoniere as Serie A’s top scorer in 2012-13 and a record-breaking €64m transfer to PSG.In France, he won six league titles, was twice Ligue 1’s leading scorer, and became PSG’s all-time leading scorer, a record that was eventually surpassed by Kylian Mbappe. Spells at Manchester United and Valencia followed, before Cavani concluded his career at Boca Juniors.
