The Minnesota Vikings’ sharp decrease in spending has caused a stir in NFL circles. The NFC North team are worth an estimated $6.25 billion, according to Forbes, and are coming off a 2025 season in which they missed the playoffs despite a 9-8 winning record. The 9-8 Vikings had to watch all three of their NFC North rivals make the playoffs in 2025GettyWith all three of their division rivals reaching the postseason, the pressure was on the Vikings to go out and make a splash in free agency to keep pace. After all, Minnesota had spent just $350 million ahead of the 2025 season, and went big again the year prior. For SKOL fans, though, their hopes were dashed as their spending number was slashed to just $226 million in 2026, putting them as the second-lowest spender in the NFL. Rumors began to swirl that there was one key reason, perhaps, as to why – the Wilf family were preparing to shut up shop and sell the Vikings.“This is the 21st year the Wilfs have owned the Vikings. Until this year, they have made a commendable attempt at winning the Lombardi Trophy,” Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press wrote on Saturday. “Meanwhile, the Twins’ Pohlad ownership isn’t unlike what Red McCombs did with the Vikings in 2005 before selling to the Wilfs. “McCombs, who bought the Vikings for $246 million in 1998, cut player and coaching staff payroll to a bare minimum and waited until he got his price [$600 million] from the Wilfs.“If the Wilfs, who curiously still haven’t named a permanent general manager since firing Kwesi Adofo-Mensah last January, were to sell the Vikings today, they could get between $8 billion and $9 billion.”But there is an argument to be made that after two seasons of aggressive ‘win-now’ moves from former general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah – which failed tremendously – that the Vikings brass have just been forced into the start of what could yet be a lengthy rebuilding process. “It’s beginning to look as if Vikings ownership now could be mirroring [Minnesota] Twins ownership, which has sought to sell its team,” Walters continued. The Vikings’ lack of spending in 2026 has led some to predict they may be considering a sale of the teamGettyThe Vikings appear to have pivoted from ‘win-now’ movesGetty“It appears Vikings owners Mark and Zygi Wilf have decided on a significant payroll slash this year. The Vikings won’t admit it, but this sure looks like a rebuilding year.”Wilf family unlikely to sell the VikingsShortly after rumors began to circulate over whether the Wilf’s were considering a sale, Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune reported that he had heard from a source close to the family that there was “zero truth” to it. Goessling further wrote, “They’ve long talked about the team staying in the family for multiple generations, and both Mark and Zygi Wilf’s kids have taken on larger roles with the team in recent years.”This report has been backed up by Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, who further suggested that the team was not being put up for sale. Florio also identified the logistical hurdles in being able to doing so if they were considering it, amid the reigning Super Bowl champions Seattle Seahawks currently being in the process of selling the team. “Per a source with knowledge of the situation, team owners Mark and Zygi Wilf are not selling the team,” Florio wrote on Sunday. Reports have since suggested that there are “zero truths” to the notion of sellingGetty“… Even if the Wilfs or any other current owner were contemplating cashing out, the league would likely encourage them to wait until after the Seahawks are sold. “Rarely, if ever, are two teams for sale simultaneously. It’s better for the NFL to have only one team available at a time — and to not minimize the availability of the franchises. That preserves the rarity of the assets, pushing the number higher and higher.“Anyone with the money can buy a superyacht. There are only 32 NFL teams. It’s an exclusive club. And the Wilfs currently aren’t looking to leave it.”Stay up to date with the NFL across all our talkSPORT platforms – subscribe to our YouTube channel for the latest news, opinion, exclusive interviews and our daily unfiltered, unscripted show ‘The S* Word, from 8am ET.
