Offered my old bike for free on Nextdoor. The person who took it messaged me two days later asking for a refund.

Wait 5 sec.

Some context: I have a perfectly functional hybrid bike I hadn't ridden in about three years. Tires needed air, chain needed a little oil, otherwise completely fine. I listed it on Nextdoor as free, first come first served, as-is, noted it needed minor maintenance. A guy, I'll call him Greg, messaged within an hour saying he'd love it, we arranged a time, he came and picked it up. He seemed happy, looked it over, said thanks, loaded it in his car. Normal transaction, or so I thought. Two days later Greg messages me saying the bike "isn't working properly" and asks what I'm going to do about it. I asked what the issue was. He said the gears weren't shifting smoothly and the seat was uncomfortable for him. I sat with that for a second. I said I was sorry to hear that but the listing did say as-is and the bike was free. He said "free doesn't mean broken." I genuinly did not know how to respond to that sentence so I just typed "the gears and seat were both functional when you picked it up, gear tuning and seat adjustments are pretty standard bike maintenance." He said he shouldn't have to spend money on something he got for free and asked if I could "at least" cover the cost of a tune-up at a bike shop, which he said would be around $60. I did not respond to that message. He sent a follow up two days later saying he had decided to donate the bike to a charity and hoped I felt good about myself. I do actualy feel pretty good about myself. The bike was free. Greg is somewhere out there, bikeless and I hope eventually fine. submitted by /u/Varinuxo [link] [comments]
