IIT Kharagpur ‘clash’: 3 expelled, 4 suspended students appeal to director to reconsider decision, request they be given opportunity to rectify behaviour

The parents of the affected students have also learnt to have appealed for a reconsideration of the decision.The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur expelled three students and suspended four students for one semester for engaging in on-campus violence.IIT Kharagpur officials said that for the first time in the institute’s history, students have been expelled. They informed that the students were intoxicated and used sticks to assault each other during the fight. The officials added that one student had sustained grievous injuries in the clash.According to officials, once the incident was reported to the Internal Disciplinary Committee, an investigation was carried out based on eyewitness accounts, CCTV footage, and other evidence.“Such incidents are not tolerated in IIT. There are rules, and all students have to abide by them. Ragging of any form is not tolerated, and this is physical assault, which can harm a student and even lead to death or permanent damage,” said an official.The official said the seven students have written to the director accepting their mistake.
