Ugandans are increasingly using e-money for business and personal transactions; the Bank of Uganda has revealed.BoU’s Integrated Annual Report 30 June 2025 released recently shows that there was a significant 28.6 percent increase in electronic money transaction values from UGX 253.7 trillion in the twelve months ending June 2024 to UGX 326.3 trillion in the year to June 2025.“Similarly, the volumes increased by 20.6 percent from 7 billion transactions to 8.4 billion over the same period. The value of financial services (excluding airtime and data purchases) notably increased by 28.6 percent from UGX 248.6 trillion in 2024 to UGX 319.6 trillion, while Person to Business Payment values increased by 15.9 percent from UGX 51.1 trillion to close at UGX 59.2 trillion over the same period,” the report reads in part, adding: “This shows increased usage of e-money for business transactions.”Electronic money service providersAccording to BoU, as at June 30, 2025, eighteen (18) entities had been licensed as e-money issuers namely: MTN Mobile Money (U) Ltd, Airtel Mobile Commerce (U) Ltd, Micropay Uganda Ltd, MCash Uganda Ltd, Stanbic Bank Uganda Ltd (Flexipay), Guinness Tech (U) Ltd, Wave Transfer Ltd, EzeeMoney Ltd, IoTec Limited, Fincom Ltd, Postbank Uganda Ltd, Interswitch, e-Tranzact, Drakma, Hamilton Mobile Commerce ,Rhino Payment Services and Lycamoney Uganda Limited.“These payment service providers had enlisted the services of 1,016,914 agents representing a considerable increase of 27 percent compared to 775,294 agents reported in June 2024. The agent network is a key component of the value chain and a critical part of the drive to extend financial services to the rural communities,” the report reveals.Loans, insurance and savings products The volume of loan disbursements increased from 40.1 million loan transactions to 156.5 million transactions while the value more than doubled from UGX 1.66 trillion in 2024 to UGX 3.5 trillion in the year to June 2025. Similarly, BoU says, loan repayments sharply increased by 248.7 percent and 123.3 percent in volume and value respectively from 56.8 million transactions worth UGX 1.6 trillion to 198.2 million transactions worth UGX 3.6 trillion in the same period.“The growth in both disbursements and repayments ameliorated the concerns over nonperforming digital loans. Additionally, Bank of Uganda continued to work with other regulatory authorities to address concerns about unethical digital lending practices,” the report says.Payment cards In a related development, the number of active debit cards decreased by 5.1 percent from 3.8 million cards reported in June 2024 to 3.6 million cards in June 2025 while the number of active credit cards slightly increased by 6.7 percent from 9,569 to 10,213 over the same period.“Debit card transaction volumes posted an increase of 16.5 percent from 10.8 million transactions in the year ending June 2024 to 12.6 million in the year ending June 2025,” BoU says, adding: “Similarly, the debit card transaction values increased by 10.1 percent from UGX 2.2 trillion in the year ending June 2024 to UGX 2.4 trillion in the year ending June 2025. Credit card transaction volumes increased by 4.1 percent from 0.31 million in the period ending June 2024 to 0.33 million in the year to June 2025. The transaction values increased by 9.6 percent from UGX 115.5 billion in the year ending June 2024 to UGX 126.7 billion in the year to June 2025.”Internet banking The report notes that the number of active users on Internet Banking decreased by 6.6 percent from 0.96 million in June 2024 to 0.9 million in June 2025.Similarly, the transaction volumes decreased by 19.5 percent from 9.7 million transactions to 7.84 million transactions over while transaction values marginally decreased by 3.4 percent from UGX 117.9 trillion to UGX 113.9 trillion.This reduction, BoU says, reflected potential user concerns about the cyber threat landscape.“Bank of Uganda continues to work with all regulated financial service providers to strengthen cyber resilience across the financial sector,” BoU says.Mobile banking The number of active users on mobile banking increased by 6.5 percent from 1.94 million users in June 2024 to 2.1 million users in June 2025.According to BoU, the transaction volume notably increased by 20.9 percent from 27.9 million transactions in the year ending June 2024 to 33.7 million transactions in the year to June 2025 while the transaction values significantly increased by 39.4 percent from UGX 11.1 trillion to UGX 15.5 trillion.The post Uganda’s Electronic Money Transactions Grow By 28.6% In 12 Months To UGX326.3 Trillion appeared first on Business Focus.
