Paralympic gold medallist Navdeep Singh didn’t get the result he wanted but came up with a throw of 45.46m in the men’s javelin throw F41 category to win the last medal for India – a silver – at the World Para Athletics Championships.India finished 10th in the final medals tally with a best-ever haul of 22 medals in the history of the competition.“It was a good end to my season. I wanted to win the gold medal but the competition was tough and conditions were hot and humid. Our season is ending and thanks to this medal, I can have some sweets. His second attempt was a foul, much to the disappointment of the galleries. “My body started working after the first couple of throws,” he said.In his third throw, he produced his best effort of 45.56m and held on to his position till the end. He produced one more legal throw of 44.82m before fouling the last two throws.Sadegh threw 48.86m in his fifth attempt to take the gold medal beyond anyone’s reach.Story continues below this adWhile Navdeep wanted nothing less than gold, the spirits of his family and friends, who had come from Haryana to cheer for him never faltered. After his medal ceremony, the 24-year-old was mobbed by his loved ones and it looked like the party would continue.“I am glad that I had so much support from the crowd. The crowd in other countries also support us but performing in front of my home crowd is a special feeling,” Navdeep said.While the season ended for Navdeep with a silver, there is some disappointing news for him.The International Paralympic Committee has dropped eight men’s events for LA28 while increasing women’s events across three sports to promote gender equality.Story continues below this adAlso Read | They survived mine blasts. I know the event has been removed from the Games but I would still participate in para sports. I haven’t thought much about it but I will likely do shot put,” he said.Though the Paralympics won’t have Navdeep’s pet event, he still has the Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya next year to look forward to.“I will work on my technique in javelin and focus on the Asian Para Games. For now, I’ll rest for two months,” concluded Navdeep.
