Officials maintained that no injuries were reported in the incident, with all passengers aboard the ferry along with 52 vehicles safely disembarking in Virar. The incident was reported in the Saphale-Virar Ro-Ro service, which ferries passengers and vehicles between Saphale and Virar through the Vaitarna creek over a span of 10 minutes. On Sunday, a Ro-Ro ferry which had departed from Jalsar in Saphale district at 5.40 pm and arrived at Virar’s Narangi jetty by 5.50 pm could not dock owing to ramp failure. According to officials from the port, a hydraulic snag owing to a burst hose pipe caused ramp failures on the ferry, preventing passengers and vehicles from disembarking. The problem was further compounded, eyewitnesses recall, owing to low tide conditions.“Soon after the incident came to light, repairs were initiated. After the pipe was fixed, the ramp was operationalised and all the passengers and vehicles disembarked safely. The entire jetty was cleared by 7.20 pm on Sunday,” said Captain CJ Lepande, Regional Port Officer of the Bandra group of Ports, Mumbai.Lepande said that at least 70 people, 17 four wheelers and 35 two wheelers were aboard the jetty when the incident occurred.“While the service is good, we have long three hour waiting periods to even avail the RoRo ferry service. There is a need to increase the frequency of these services. And special attention must also be given to passenger safety to prevent such incidents in the future,” a passenger who was stranded on the ferry on Sunday told reporters.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt Ltd
