A roadway near a Walt Disney World Resort icon has officially been renamed to honor the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk.According to Fox35, Lake County commissioners voted five to zero last month to rename a stretch of road in Central Florida the Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway. The highway includes a section of Wellness Way from U.S. 27 to the Orange County line, including Schofield Rd. in Clermont, just a short drive from Walt Disney World Resort. Local officials say the designation is honorary–GPS and other navigation services will still use the highway’s official name–but a sign has already been installed.Credit: Lake County CommissionersFamously, Schofield Road borders the “Hidden Mickey forest,” which is composed of thousands of pine trees that Walt Disney World Resort cast members helped plant as part of a conservation project in the 1990s. Much of the natural area has been redeveloped since then, but the Mickey Mouse head (which some Disney Parks fans call the “world’s largest Hidden Mickey”) is still visible in aerial images on Google Maps. Days after the Turning Point USA founder was assassinated at a college campus event in Utah, late-night host Jimmy Kimmel joked about President Trump and other conservatives’ responses to the shooting on air. In response, broadcasting networks Sinclair and Nexstar refused to air Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr threatened to investigate Kimmel. Due to the backlash, Disney-owned ABC pulled the show indefinitely.Credit: Gage Skidmore, Flickr; Disney/ABCMany viewed Disney’s decision as a capitulation to government-enforced censorship, and fans on both sides of the aisle boycotted the company. The following week, Disney brought back Jimmy Kimmel Live!, but it took days (and lots of discussions) before Sinclair and Nexstar agreed to air the show on their local stations, which represent nearly one-quarter of American households.Did you know about the Hidden Mickey forest before reading this article?
