According to her, the only fruit that has 4 grams of protein is guava. “1 cup guava = 4 grams of protein (almost like half a boiled egg!), she shared in an Instagram post. She added that, beyond protein, guava is a diabetic-friendly powerhouse, and the leaves of the fruit are a must-have in the form of a tea.Is guava the fruit with protein?Dr Vijay Negalur, HoD, diabetology, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said guava is unique among fruits because it has around 4 grams of protein per cup. “However, it’s not the only fruit that contains protein. Others, like avocados and jackfruit, also have some. What makes guavas special is their unique blend of protein, fibre, vitamin C, and a very low glycemic index, all in one fruit. This is why it stands out for people with diabetes,” said Dr Negalur.Notably, a low glycemic index and load means it raises blood sugar slowly. “It’s fibre content also slows carbohydrate absorption, helping to prevent spikes after meals. Additionally, the antioxidants in guava reduce oxidative stress, which can be a hidden cause of diabetes complications,” said Dr Negalur. Did you know? Spread your fruit intake across meals instead of having it all at once.
