(File)The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Monday said it has chargesheeted Rahul Sarkar, who is accused of operating as the Lawrence Bishnoi gang’s passport procurement module and making a fake passport for a prime accused in the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. The central agency said it has filed its fifth chargesheet before a special NIA court in Delhi in connection with an alleged terror conspiracy hatched by the Bishnoi gang in association with the proscribed Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) to spread terrorism in India.Sarkar allegedly forged a passport based on fake documents of one of the main conspirators in the Moosewala murder, gangster Sachin Bishnoi alias Thapan, who was extradited to India from Azerbaijan by the Delhi Police in August 2023.“NIA has charged Sarkar with facilitating members of the Bishnoi gang in committing terror activities in India. Besides assisting the gang members in fleeing the country, he was involved in preparing and arranging forged identity documents, such as Aadhaar card, voter ID and bank passbook for them,” an NIA spokesperson said.“A probe has revealed that Sarkar also used fake documents to aid the gang members, including co-accused Sachin Bishnoi, in fraudulently procuring passports to escape the country and carry on with their terror activities. Sarkar is the 22nd accused to be chargesheeted so far in the case. Of these, 18 accused, including Sarkar, have been arrested while four are absconding,” the spokesperson added. The Delhi Police registered the BKI-Bishnoi terror-gangster nexus case on August 4, 2022, and NIA took over the probe on August 26, 2022, at the direction of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to probe a larger conspiracy.Last month, the Canadian government designated the Bishnoi gang a terrorist entity under the Criminal Code, a step that bars Canadians from providing it with financial or material support, and allows for the freezing of assets, property seizures and criminal charges against affiliates. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said the designation gives law enforcement “enhanced powers to combat a group that has instilled fear through violence and intimidation”.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram
