Samsung announced a new semiconductor chip plant in Taylor, Texas, in the United States in 2021. Mass production of chips at the plant was initially planned to begin in 2024. However, the timeline was later pushed to 2026. Earlier this week, a report from Korea claimed that mass production had been delayed once again. When the company previously said it would begin producing chips at the plant in 2026, it was referring to operational readiness for mass production by the end of this year, and not mass production itself. According to the company, that timeline remains unchanged.Samsung Foundry will most likely start mass production of chips at its Taylor plant in early 2027.During a conference call in January 2026, Kang Suk-chae, Executive Vice President of Samsung Foundry, said, “The Taylor fab in the United States is under construction as planned, aiming for the timely commencement of operations this year.”Referencing this year’s timeline, a Samsung Electronics spokesperson said, “The plant will be ready to be operational by then.”The company has reportedly received a temporary certificate of occupancy from the city of Taylor for an area covering approximately 88,000 square feet at Fab 1. Trial operations are expected to start this month. These operations include activating and testing Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment.Samsung will reportedly fabricate second-generation 2nm (SF2P) chips at its Taylor plant. It will also manufacture 2nm chips at its Pyeongtaek plant in Gyeonggi, South Korea. The company has already secured a $16.5 billion order from Tesla to produce AI6 chips for cars and humanoid robots.
