While player numbers dropped as time went on, with some players seemingly put off by the complexity and sometimes steep learning curve of the extraction shooter, Bungie reported that players were having more fun with the game the deeper they got into it.The studio says it has fixed up a few concerns ahead of launch day, including input lag and communication bugs, and is keeping an eye on other issues raised by server slam players. Marathon will launch with a $40 price tag--the same as Arc Raiders--and while the game has hovered near the top of Steam's top-sellers chart recently, the paid launch will be the true test of the game's staying power. The difficulty of getting a live-service shooter off the ground has been underscored recently by Highguard and its high-profile struggles. Underwhelming player numbers saw developer Wildlight Entertainment gutted by layoffs shortly after launch, and now the studio has announced that March 12 will be Highguard's final day.The numbers put up by Marathon's server slam are looking promising, if not exactly the runaway hit that its competitor Arc Raiders was at launch, but it's too soon to say whether Marathon will prove to have the staying power required to survive in its ultra-competitive market.
