Prime Minister Netanyahu fires back at Attorney General, says he will not fire National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.By World Israel News StaffIsraeli Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara called on the Supreme Court Wednesday to directly order Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to fire National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir (Otzma Yehudit) from his government, drawing sharp criticism from the coalition and even from some opposition MKs.In her 83-page letter to the court, Baharav-Miara repeated her accusations against Ben-Gvir, claiming that he “systematically undermined the independence of the police department” by allegedly interfering in investigations and demonstrated a “contempt for the rule of law.”“As long as no significant change occurs in the relevant factual basis, and the prime minister does not meet the burden of explaining why Ben-Gvir should not be removed from his position,” Baharav-Miara continued, “the Attorney General’s position is that an absolute order should be issued determining that he cannot serve as the minister in charge of the Israel Police.”Ben-Gvir denounced Baharav-Miara’s petition to the court, slamming her both over the timing, in the middle of the conflict with Iran, and the attempt to diminish the right of the premier to hire and fire ministers.“At a time when the State of Israel is in one of the most fateful and important wars in its history, a dismissed criminal official is trying to carry out a governmental coup in a democratic state and remove an elected public official,” Ben-Gvir said.“There is no precedent in the history of democratic countries in which an official dismisses an elected public official — Gali Baharav-Miara thinks we are in Iran, and soon she and her fellow criminal officials will set up Revolutionary Guards here — democracy will win!”Prime Minister Netanyahu emphasized in a statement that he will not fire Ben-Gvir, and castigated the Attorney General over the timing of her petition.“It is inconceivable that in the midst of an existential war against Iran, led by President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu, the Attorney General is asking the High Court of Justice to issue an absolute order instructing the prime minister to dismiss the Minister of National Security, who is responsible for internal security during the war,” Netanyahu’s office said Wednesday.“The Attorney General’s request to dismiss a senior government minister against whom not even a criminal investigation has been opened undermines the foundations of democracy, shatters the principle of separation of powers, and contradicts Basic Law: The Government.”“As the prime minister already announced several weeks ago, Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir will continue to serve in his position.”Opposition MK Yulia Malinovsky also criticized Baharav-Miara for lobbying the court to pressure Netanyahu to fire Ben-Gvir in wartime.“Regardless of the substance of the matter, the timing of the Attorney General’s move to instruct the High Court to issue an order for Ben-Gvir’s removal is detached from reality and clearly unreasonable.“The State of Israel is in a fateful war, Israeli citizens are in shelters, our pilots are in the skies over Tehran, and no one should be dealing right now with controversial issues that could divide the people.”“The people of Israel must be united against the common enemy, which is the Iranian regime — in case anyone has forgotten.”The post Israeli AG sparks outrage demanding court order PM to fire security minister during wartime appeared first on World Israel News.
