Daniel Radcliffe refuses to wear Alysa Liu’s gold medal after Winter Olympics controversy

Wait 5 sec.

American figure skating sensation Alysa Liu came away from the 2026 Winter Olympics with not one, but two gold medals. The 20-year-old was forced to return to the United States one hefty gold medal down, though, due to the medal separating from the ribbon, which by Olympic ruling requires it to be returned, albeit only temporarily. GettyLiu returned to the US without one of her two golds after it broke when she dropped it[/caption]Liu wasn’t the only one, as fellow Team USA Winter Olympics star Breezy Johnson’s medal disbanded from its cord just moments after the skier secured gold in the women’s downhill – the same event in which Lindsey Vonn suffered her gruesome leg injury. But, during an appearance on Monday’s TODAY Show, social media sensation Liu, who has now amassed over 7.1 million followers on her Instagram account alone, was showing off both medals around her neck once again. To Liu’s surprise, backstage at the taping of the show, she met none other than actor Daniel Radcliffe. Magical meeting between Liu and RadcliffeIn a heart-warming encounter, Liu was left looking on in amazement and jumping up and down as the Harry Potter star entered the room, to which he greeted her with a hug and a high-five before snapping some pictures together. But the meeting also went viral for the 36-year-old’s reaction when Liu offered him the chance to pose for a picture wearing one of her gold medals. “I obviously wasn’t going to ask, but yeah,” Radcliffe could be heard saying to Liu when she handed him her medal. As he went to place it over his head, he ultimately stopped in his tracks before ultimately – and very politely – declining the opportunity to do so. “You know what? I can’t wear it. I’ll hold it. Wearing it feels like stolen valor.”Radcliffe went on to tell Liu: “You being you was the most joyful thing I’ve watched.”Fans flocked to social media to comment on the viral interaction, praising the actor for the stance he took on not wearing the medal. Class,” one fan posted to X (formerly Twitter). “This guy has got to be the most well adjusted child/adult actor in human history. For all the immense fame he has, he always stays so grounded,” a second wrote. A third fan added, “I’m so glad he decided to not put it on, that’s how it should be!” Even The U.S. Figure Skating account got involved, playfully comparing Radcliffe’s iconic role as Harry Potter to Liu’s Olympic success: “Gold snitch catcher gold medalist.”Liu won the first of her gold medals – the damaged one – in the team event, alongside Ilia Malinin. The second came in her spell-binding free skate on February 19, despite entering the final in third place following errors made in qualification. She narrowly edged out Japanese skaters Sakamoto Kaori (224.90) and Ami Nakai (219.16) who claimed silver and bronze as she became the first American on the top step of the podium in the event since Sarah Hughes at Salt Lake 2002. “It was just bliss, I was so happy to be there. I felt like I was floating,” Liu said after she secured victory. “I felt like the crowd carried me, I did everything I wanted to do. I was peak happiness when I was out there on the ice.“Nothing could bring me higher than that. I don’t really feel pressure, I feel excited to be there, and happy. That’s the stage I always wanted to show my programs on, show my dress off and just get myself out there. I would do it again.”Stay up to date with the latest from US Sports across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more.
