Iconic NFL franchise consider naming rights auction as furious fans warn ‘expect riots’

Wait 5 sec.

Lambeau Field is the most iconic stadium in football.First opened in September 1957, nearly 70 years ago, it’s one of the oldest in the league and home to the Green Bay Packers. The Packers need to raise money or risk getting left behind other NFL teamsGettyOriginally known as ‘New City Stadium’ for eight seasons, the building was renamed in August 1965 in memory of team founder Earl ‘Curly’ Lambeau, who had died months earlier. It has carried his name ever since, and become synonymous with a Packers franchise that has gone on to build a rich sporting history with four Super Bowl wins.Ahead of the 2026 season, though, Green Bay is said to be considering a previously unthinkable Lambeau Field change.Packers could sell off naming rights to historic stadiumTeam president and CEO Ed Policy recently spoke to Ben Fischer of the Sports Business Journal and discussed fears of being ‘left behind’ in the modern NFL era.The Packers are unique in a shifting US sports landscape, and remain the only non-profit, community-owned professional sports franchise in the country. That brings challenges of its own, and Policy has confirmed Green Bay will take a ‘more aggressive posture’ on revenue growth moving forward.According to the Sports Business Journal, that will take three primary forms: More offseason events at Lambeau Field, ticket price hikes and more sponsorship sales. The third point could see the naming rights to Lambeau Field sold off.“We’re soon to be the only stadium without naming rights,” Policy said, referencing Arrowhead Stadium and Soldier Field, where the Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago Bears are soon expected to depart.“That’s not a threshold we’re looking to cross any time soon, but we might be a little more aggressive with some of the other entitlement inventory we just hadn’t taken advantage of in the past, including things like training facility entitlements and the Titletown campus.”Lambeau Field has carried the name of a franchise legend for decadesGettyThe team could be forced to sell of naming rights to raise revenueGettyWhile the Packers don’t want to sell off naming rights to Lambeau Field right now, it’s a financial lever they might be forced to pull down the line. After all, almost every other NFL team players in a sponsored stadium.SoFi’s deal was reported to be more than $30m annually over a 20-year period (around $600m in total) for the ‘naming rights and sponsorship agreements’ for SoFi Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers.Allegiant Air is said to pay approximately $20m-$25m per year for the naming rights to Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders.Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz holds a 27-year naming rights agreement for the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which is reportedly worth $12m annually.Lambeau Field has been standing far longer than those buildings, and thanks to the history of the Packers, could command a deal that’s on-par with the biggest in the NFL.Packers fans are furious at the idea of selling off the stadium nameGettyBut the suggestion that naming rights could soon be sold off has not gone down well with fans.Packers fans strongly oppose Lambeau Field name change“Some things should never be touched,” one wrote on X, responding to Policy’s comments.“If they go through with this, they can expect riots on the streets of Green Bay outside Lambeau,” a second wrote.“Can’t call it Lambeau Leap if the stadium ain’t called Lambeau Field. Hold this L,” a third said, while another posted: “That’s ridiculous. LEAVE THE NAME ALONE.”NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?“Nah Man, Policy can (sell) that c*** elsewhere. We ain’t like the others. This is sacred,” a fifth wrote.“We would revolt,” a sixth concluded. It was once unthinkable that Lambeau Field would lose its iconic name. But money talks, and if the Packers don’t want to be left behind, selling off the rights to their historic stadium will have to be considered.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more.
