Maltese authorities are warning fishers to keep their distance from a damaged Russian tanker drifting between Malta and Libya following a suspected missile attack earlier this month. The vessel, identified as Arctic Metagaz, is believed to be part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” and is reportedly carrying around 700 metric tons of fuel along with large quantities of LNG.According to Transport Malta’s Ports and Yachting Directorate, the tanker is currently “not under command”, meaning it cannot manoeuvre properly. Authorities also noted that the vessel was operating without an NUC signal, a visual indicator typically used to show a ship is unable to control its movement.Mariners have been urged to stay at least five nautical miles away from the tanker at all times. The Maltese government has also activated an emergency contingency plan as a precaution. As of Saturday, the vessel was drifting around 50 nautical miles southeast of Malta, raising concerns over possible environmental and maritime safety risks.Authorities are also monitoring weather conditions, with fears that wind direction could potentially push the 244-metre-long tanker closer to Malta, possibly near the west coast of Gozo.By Sunday night, the tanker remained outside Maltese territorial waters, but the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture warned that it could still pose a danger to local fishers operating in the area. With assistance from the Armed Forces of Malta, the department shared the vessel’s coordinates, Latitude 35°16′N, Longitude 13°38′E, to help fishers identify its location and steer clear. What do you make of this situation?•
