‘They are looking really great’: Trump teases making Venezuela the 51st state

Wait 5 sec.

Venezuela is in a tricky situation at the moment. On one hand, many of them are visibly relieved to no longer be living under Nicolas Maduro. On the other hand, it doesn’t exactly bode well for your independence and sovereignty when a foreign power can whisk away your head of state and replace him with an obedient puppet. Trump and his goons are now busily draining Venezuela of its natural resources, and it’s safe to say the future for the regular Venezuelan on the street isn’t exactly sunny. But, if Trump has anything to say about it, they might not be Venezuelans for long! Nope, he’s hinting that they may soon be proud Americans! Taking to Truth Social, Trump celebrated Venezuela’s victory over the notorious international baseball titan that is Italy, indicating it’s yet more proof that the country is booming since he killed all those people. So, what’s next? “They are looking really great. Good things are happening to Venezuela lately! I wonder what this magic is all about? STATEHOOD, #51, ANYONE? President DONALD J. TRUMP” The first South American US state? Trump adding a 51st state to the union seems to be a low-key ambition of his, with Greenland, Canada, DC, and (obviously) Puerto Rico all candidates for statehood. But hey, maybe Venezuela is going to jump the line and become the first state of the union in South America. @realDonaldTrump Absolutely, Mr. President, let's make it happen! We all want this beautiful moment to come true. Let's do it! See you on the Donald J. Trump Highway.Venezuela – State #51!! pic.twitter.com/27NAVAnCjz— CarlosE (@carloskumis) March 17, 2026 That said, this seems extraordinarily unlikely to actually happen. After all, if Venezuela were made a a state, that would give every Venezuelan free rein to travel to and live within the continental United States. Which… well, doesn’t exactly sound like a particularly Trumpy policy. I can just imagine the fury of his base as Trump flings open the gates to 31 million Venezuelans… On top of that, Venezuelans are significantly more left-leaning than the average American, so simply incorporating Venezuela into America may tip the electoral scales towards the Democrats in multiple key districts. So, while Trump may tease it, it’s unlikely to happen. That said, Trump would probably consider adding a new state a jewel in his presidential reputation, so we’d expect him to try this at some point. Cuba? We’re looking in your direction…
