Cheltenham Festival-winning jockey will miss first two days of Grand National after breaching whip rules

Wait 5 sec.

Charlie Deutsch has been banned and fined after winning the Grand Annual at last week’s Cheltenham Festival. The jockey was ruled to have broken the whip rules on Martator who came out of nowhere to win under a late drive in a 66/1 surprise.View Tweet: https://twitter.com/hashtag/ITVRacing?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5EtfwGettyDeutsch won’t be riding for 14 days after being found to be in breach of the whip rules[/caption]The whip limit enforced in jumps racing is seven strikes in a race and Deutsch was seen to go two over the limit. The rules are strictly enforced by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) who handed the jockey a ban of 14 days.Usually this penalty is a seven day ban but as this came in a Grade 3 race it doubles the penalisation.Martator won by a nose to the well-backed and previous year’s winner of the Grand Annual, Jazzy Matty. The 14-day ban will be enforced in two seven day increments: March 27-April 2 and then April 4-10.This rules Deutsch out of the first two days of the Grand National Festival at Aintree, but means he will be available to take part in the Grand National on Saturday, April 11.Trainer Venetia Williams scooped the £84,405 prize money at Cheltenham in the 2m handicap but will have to go without her stable jockey. What was said?On ITV after the race, Deutsch said: “I’m so used to bad luck this year, I thought it can’t happen!“I looked at the big screen, everything was going perfectly through the race.“First time blinkers, I hadn’t sat on him before with the blinkers. I jumped the first one and I thought these are working!“And it helped his jumping, it helped him travel and the way he finished as well, it helped everything!“Venetia, she’s classy and form is temporary, and class is permanent.“Just over the moon.”2026 Grand National Antepost tips and declaration datestalkSPORT BET Betting Offer – Get up to £35 matched if your first best loses – CLAIM HERE*Commercial content notice: Taking one of the bookmaker offers featured in this article may result in a payment to talkSPORT. 18+.
