Watkins says he expected England snub amid Aston Villa form

Ollie Watkins has said he expected to miss out on this month’s England squad after a poor run of club form for Aston Villa.Watkins was a notable omission when Thomas Tuchel named his squad for March’s friendlies with Uruguay and Japan this month. The 30-year-old has scored just nine goals in the Premier League this season but was on target as Aston Villa took a step closer to Champions League qualification by beating West Ham on Sunday.Asked about his England snub, Watkins expressed his disappointment but said his performances have not merited inclusion. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});“Everyone wants to play for their country but I expected that because my form has not been that great,” he said to Sky Sports.“I know what I can do and when I put on an England shirt I feel like I have always performed well.”Watkins scored the second in a 2-0 win over West Ham that saw Villa capitalise on slip-ups from top-five rivals Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa. The forward said the win was massive for Villa, who ended a poor run of form with three points.“Massive for us with it being the last game going into the international break and all the teams around us playing before and them dropping points. We knew the job in hand and we have taken it and maximised our opportunity to try and get into the Champions League places. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});“We are happy with that off the back of a bit of poor form. It is one of the best performances we have had this season.”Read – Howe bemoans ‘painful’ afternoon as Newcastle lose derbySee more – The most memorable League Cup final moments everFollow the Football Faithful on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTubeThe post Watkins says he expected England snub amid Aston Villa form first appeared on The Football Faithful.
