The Achimota Golf Club’s Lady Captain’s Prize 2026 tournament ended successfully on Saturday, March 21, 2026, with several male and female golfers emerging as winners. The event, hosted by Lady Captain Louanges Mang, forms part of efforts to promote the development of golf among young girls, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds.Approximately 120 golfers from across the capital participated in this year’s competition, competing in the men’s, ladies’ and amateur categories.Speaking at the event, former Achimota Golf Club Captain, Sjoerd Grueter, described the growing participation of women in the sport as encouraging.“It is extremely encouraging to see the number of ladies who are starting to participate—not just playing golf, but also taking part in tournaments,” he said.He added that during his tenure, deliberate efforts were made to introduce more women to the sport.“During my time as captain of Achimota, we brought in about 90 ladies to try golf, and a number of them stayed on to become permanent members,” he noted.Despite concerns about the high cost associated with golf, Lady Captain Louanges Mang emphasised that the tournament was driven by a clear social purpose.“We are playing for a purpose. We didn’t just come to play golf,” she told JoySports.“We are here to support young ladies who cannot afford to learn the sport, and to give them the opportunity to be part of it,” she added.Lady Captain of Achimota Golf Club, Louanges MangThe Lady Captain’s Prize remains one of the key events on the club’s calendar, combining competition with initiatives aimed at expanding access to the sport.
