Malta registered its lowest crime rate on record in 2025, according to the latest annual report by the CrimeMalta Observatory. The report found that the country recorded 27 crimes per 1,000 residents, marking a continued drop from previous years and a major decline from the 46 crimes per 1,000 residents recorded in 2004. Overall, crime per capita in Malta is now around 40% lower than it was 20 years ago.A total of 15,594 criminal reports were filed in 2025, representing a 6% decrease compared to 2024 and significantly fewer than the 26,419 cases experts had projected based on earlier trends.Malta also registered the lowest theft rate in 25 years, with theft cases dropping by 70%. Gozo experienced its lowest recorded theft rate as well.Meanwhile, all homicide cases were solved, continuing a trend that has been maintained since 2018, while law enforcement also made record drug seizures during the year.Despite population growth, strong economic activity and record tourism numbers, Malta’s crime rate remains below the European average. The country also ranked among the 12 safest countries in the world for law and order, and the safest in the Mediterranean, according to the latest World Justice Project report. However, the report noted a shift in the nature of crime. Around 34% of criminal offences now fall under “internal crimes”, including fraud, money laundering and domestic violence. In some cases, increases in reported crimes, particularly domestic violence, are linked to greater awareness and improved reporting mechanisms.Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said the results are the outcome of long-term strategies focused on prevention, stronger policing resources and community collaboration.Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà also highlighted the role of data analysis, intelligence-led policing and community policing teams, which he said have helped Malta maintain low crime levels despite significant population and tourism increases. The report was prepared by criminologists Professor Saviour Formosa and Professor Janice Formosa Pace. What do you make of these statistics? •
