THE RUNDOWNHailee Steinfeld isn’t at this year’s Oscars. Her film Sinners is up for multiple awards tonight, including Best Picture.Steinfeld is expecting her first child and is nearing her due date.Hailee Steinfeld didn’t join her Sinners co-stars at the Oscars this evening. The star is pregnant with her first child and mentioned in her newsletter last month that she’s “about to have a baby.”During the show, her co-star Michael B. Jordan alluded to that in his acceptance speech for Best Actor, thanking her and saying, “Hailee at home, she’s getting ready to have the baby right now.”On March 13, Steinfeld wrote on her Beau Society newsletter about how proud she is of Sinners. When asked to recall a moment from press or filming that made her smile, she answered, “At this moment, being two days away from the Oscars, I know there is no one single particular moment that can encapsulate what this filming experience meant to me. These people have left a mark on me and on my heart that will never go away.”Steinfeld plays Mary opposite Best Actor nominee Michael B. Jordan in Ryan Coogler’s acclaimed film. The project has had an incredible awards season run, recently winning Best Ensemble Cast at the Actor Awards earlier this month. Sinners has 16 nods tonight, including for Best Picture, making it the most-nominated film in Oscars history.Steinfeld praised Coogler’s directing style in her ELLE Women in Hollywood profile, saying, “He’s the most phenomenal listener. Even as he’s directing a huge ensemble cast with moving parts, and we’re a little delayed, and the weather’s screwing us up, it’s like you’re the only person in the room. He hears every word you’re saying, and he has a way of reworking something in that exact moment to make it somehow better than it already was.”She added, “He has an innate ability to write these female characters in a way that does not shrink them in the slightest. I think [his wife] Zinzi Coogler has a lot to do with that.”Steinfeld also reflected on the film’s impact, saying, “I’m somewhere between feeling like it’s shocking that it shocked so many people—but also, same. It knocked me off my feet, too, being part of it and now on the outside of it. I can only hope and pray that something like this can move us in this direction.”Steinfeld announced her pregnancy in December and debuted her red carpet maternity style at January’s Golden Globes, wearing an elegant Prada look:Steve Granitz//Getty Images
