Mdina might be known for its quiet streets and historic charm, but according to the latest findings from the CrimeMalta Observatory, it also topped a much less romantic list in 2025.The Observatory’s Annual Crime Review 2025 found that Mdina registered the highest rate of residence thefts last year. And while no locality exceeded five times the national crime rate, Mdina still stood out, alongside Munxar, Bormla, St Julian’s and Santa Luċija, all of which fell within the two-to-five times national average bracket. When it comes to vehicle-related offences, including vandalism, break-ins and theft, Floriana ranked highest. It was followed by Bormla, Mdina, Birgu, Marsa and Pietà.Meanwhile, Bormla also recorded the highest rate of domestic violence in 2025, followed by Santa Luċija, Valletta, Isla and Marsa. On the commercial front, St Julian’s stood out, recording offence rates exceeding five times the national average. It was followed by Gudja, San Lawrenz and Bormla. The study is based on a rate analysis rather than simple counts, using a Relative Index of Spatial Crime (RISC) alongside trend and spatial analysis, meaning the findings highlight where crime hits hardest, not just where it happens most. What do you make of these statistics?•
