Gio Reyna “can be very useful” for USMNT despite club woes

Gio Reyna’s lack of playing time with Borussia Moenchengladbach may have carried over into 2026, but it hasn’t disrupted his international status.Reyna was named to Mauricio Pochettino’s 27-player roster on Tuesday, 11 days until the U.S. men’s national team faces Belgium in Atlanta, Georgia. The Borussia Dortmund loanee made four starts for Gladbach to close out his 2025 schedule, but hasn’t featured nearly as much in the new year. Reyna has played just 26 minutes in two appearances in 2026, while being an unused substitute on four occasions. Although a muscle injury hampered the resumption of his league campaign, Reyna has found it tough to truly be an impact player in Eugen Polanski’s squad. The 23-year-old’s last international window in November saw him score in a 2-1 victory over Paraguay while also come off the bench to assist once in a 5-1 romp over Uruguay. Reyna impressed in his 114 minutes under Pochettino, showing glimpses yet again of his potential when given consistent opportunities to play. While many fans are worried about Reyna’s club future, Pochettino isn’t, reaffirming his excitement in the player. “Gio was fantastic in November with us. Everyone praised him against Paraguay,” Pochettino said to media Tuesday after his roster announcement. “He was committed to be with us. I was really happy that he was involved. He is a very special talent and a very special player. Even if he’s not playing too much for his club, he can be very useful for us.“Every single player is different,” Pochettino added about the comparison of Reyna’s club and international situation. “We cannot follow the same rule because every player is different. Different character, different profile, different talent. We are not too worried.” Reyna has scored nine goals in 34 caps for the USMNT and will be seeking to add to those totals this month. First though, he will travel with his Gladbach teammates to FC Koln on Saturday in their final league match of the month.
