Injured Climber Rescued By Helicopter In Mellieħa Operation

A major rescue operation unfolded in Mellieħa yesterday evening after a female climber required urgent medical assistance near the Red Tower.Civil Protection Malta was alerted shortly before 7pm, prompting the immediate deployment of rescue teams from Fire Stations 1, 3 and 5 to the challenging site.Two rescuers abseiled down to reach the injured climber, carrying out an initial assessment in difficult conditions. Due to the severity of her injuries, an Armed Forces of Malta helicopter was called in to airlift her to hospital for further treatment.The operation didn’t end there.Using specialised rope rescue techniques, teams also worked to safely assist five other climbers back to a secure area, alongside the rescuers on site.Authorities described the rescue as particularly complex, with the location only accessible on foot and operations carried out in complete darkness, significantly increasing the level of difficulty and risk.Civil Protection Malta thanked the Armed Forces of Malta, Mater Dei Hospital’s Emergency Department and the Malta Police Force for their assistance and coordination during the operation.Credit: @civilprotectionmalta•
